Toshiba Group companies in Singapore demonstrate commitment to the environment through coastal clean-up activity

On 22 April 2016, Toshiba Group companies in Singapore participated in a coastal clean-up activity at Chek Jawa, Pulau Ubin island for the second time. The activity was held to commemorate Earth Day 2016 and “Toshiba Group Global Environmental Action” day, an environmental campaign Toshiba has held annually since 2014 to increase environmental awareness among its employees.

In collaboration with Singapore’s National Parks Board (NParks), Singapore Toshiba Group companies were tasked with picking litter along the coastline of Chek Jawa, which hosts innumerable amount of biodiversity. Debris and waste in the surroundings not only devalue the natural beauty of the landscape and coastline, but also release toxic chemicals which are harmful to wildlife.

Following a welcome speech by Corporate Representative-Asia, Toshiba Corporation, and Managing Director, Toshiba Asia Pacific Pte. Ltd. Mr. Tatsuo Doko, and a safety briefing by NParks, Toshiba participants were divided into two groups to comb through the 300m coastline along Chek Jawa. At the end of the activity, about 200kg of trash was collected.

Sharing on Toshiba’s commitment to the environment, Mr. Tatsuo Doko said, “Coastal clean-up activity is about much more than picking up trash. It is also a chance for Toshiba to join people around the world on Earth Day to demonstrate our desire for clean coastal beaches and healthy marine life. We can only hope to succeed when our staff, individually and collectively, take personal responsibility in keeping our coastal beach clean and green.”

This year, 56 participants from Toshiba Asia Pacific, Toshiba Data Dynamics, Toshiba Electronics Asia (Singapore), Toshiba Global Commerce Solutions, Toshiba Singapore, and Toshiba TEC Singapore participated in the coastal clean-up activity.
