« Back Toshiba Asia Pacific Receives 3R Packaging Award 2011

SINGAPORE – Toshiba Asia Pacific Pte. Ltd., has received a Merit Award in the Singapore Packaging Agreement 3R Packaging Awards 2011. The awards are presented annually to companies that have made notable achievements in reducing packaging waste and were presented today at the opening ceremony of the Third Meeting of the Regional 3R Forum in Asia.

Increasing waste from commercial packaging materials has become a concern in recent years. Domestic waste accounted for 58% of all waste disposed of in Singapore in 2010 and approximately one third of it was from packaging. National Environment Agency of Singapore (NEA) took steps to address the issue on June 5, 2007, when it initiated the Singapore Packaging Agreement with the industrial sector as a measure to encourage manufacturers and users of packaging to reduce packaging waste.

As a signatory to the agreement, Toshiba Asia Pacific is committed to meet national recycling targets and to promote efforts to reduce waste from packaging. The company implemented a recycling program to reduce waste by recycling toner cartridges for all Singapore users of Toshiba’s multi functional printers.

Before the implementation of the recycling program for used toner cartridges, users disposed of used toner cartridges and waste toner bags along with ordinary office waste. The discarded packaging – estimated at 3.4 tons of cartridges and 120 kilograms of waste toner bags a year – were disposed of at the incineration plants.

Under Toshiba’s recycling initiative, waste collection boxes are set up in customer premises across Singapore. Customers can dispose all used cartridges and these collected cartridges will be recycled into semi-raw plastics for re-manufacturing.

Toshiba is committed to creating a better environment and a better world for people everywhere, a philosophy summed up in “Toshiba Eco Style”. Through “Toshiba Eco Style”, Toshiba strives to create eco-conscious products and services for individuals and society.
