From 19-21 October 2016, Toshiba showcased its railway solutions at the 2016 Singapore International Transport Congress and Exhibition (SITCE). Themed “Innovating Transport for Liveable Cities”, authorities, policy makers, urban planners, transport operators and solution providers met to discuss and exchange ideas on issues and challenges faced in developing urban transport systems.
At the exhibition, Toshiba showcased its Traction Energy Storage System (TESS) with Super Charge ion Battery (SCiB™) solution, which acts as an independent power supply source when there is an unexpected cut in energy source.
The benefits of Toshiba’s TESS with SCiB™ are:
- Better Regenerative Braking Operation reduces the abrupt shift from regenerative braking to mechanical braking of cars, delays wear and tear of rolling stock brake shoe, and contributes to smoother train braking.
- Energy Saving with 95% charge-discharge efficiency greatly reduces energy wastage and promotes power demand peak.
- Feeding Voltage Stabilization improves traction power quality.
- Emergency Power Supply during power failures as stored energy can be utilized to accelerate trains and safely bring passengers to the nearest station, especially useful when installed in tunnel sections.
Toshiba also promoted other solutions such as its Permanent Magnetic Synchronous Motor (PMSM) technology which offers high efficiency, easy maintenance and low noise, and its TrueLine transit scheduling system, which enables train operators to better manage train schedules through online cloud systems and user-friendly interface.
Mr. Chok Liong Meng, General Manager for Energy & Infrastructure Systems at Toshiba Asia Pacific Pte Ltd, recognises the importance of consistent, stable and smooth operations to railway operators. He says, “Toshiba looks to making this possible through providing products that are well thought out in terms of design, functionality and practicality. Through our years of experience in railway solutions, Toshiba aims to contribute to the daily lives of commuters with smooth and safe travel journeys.”
Burgeoning economic growth and urbanization have catalyzed countries in the Asia Pacific region to step up efforts in developing their public transportation infrastructures to enhance connectivity and shorten travelling distance and time.
Toshiba is able to respond through its innovative solutions, and has contributed to Taiwan’s High Speed Rail and propulsion systems for rolling stock used mainly in China, Brazil, the Philippines, Taiwan and Japan.
