On 7 Oct to 10 Oct 2013, Toshiba Asia Pacific Pte Ltd’s Railway Systems, part of Social Infrastructure Systems Division took part in this year’s Singapore International Transport Congress and Exhibition (SITCE 2013) held at Suntec Convention Centre. SITCE 2013 is jointly organized by the Singapore Land Transport Authority (LTA), the International Association of Public Transport (UTIP) and MSI Global Pte Ltd., this event will be of great importance and interest to the Asia Pacific region’s urban transport spectrum. The theme for SITCE 2013 is “People centered Mobility for Livable Cities”. It signifies the important role to deliver a people-centered land transport that meets the diverse needs of an inclusive society and one that provides for a livable and vibrant global city.

In July 2013, Toshiba was awarded by Singapore railway operator, SMRT Trains Ltd (SMRT) of a successful major order for Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors (PMSM) for the refurbishment of existing drive systems of 66 C151 series trains, consisting of 6 cars, a total of 396 cars. This is the first deployment of the high efficiency PMSM outside of Japan, and Toshiba will use it as a springboard to winning further orders in the global market.
Therefore, Toshiba Railway Systems entered SITCE 2013, in hope to look for business opportunities with Toshiba energy saving technologies and of course to increase the presence of Toshiba products in the railway transport industry. The information within Toshiba’s booth showcasing energy saving technologies and major projects awarded to Toshiba Railway Systems Division across the globe. Other information included display of 3D model of a train cabin with full motor engine mockup, the actual Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM) that is installed in a railway train, other information includes smart community. These information are targeted at Asia Pacific’s public transport operators, Rolling Stock manufacturer and officers of the government that are involves in the development of the transportation systems.

Toshiba has the honor to have the presence of Mr Desmond Kuek, CEO of SMRT Coporation Ltd to visit Toshiba’s booth. It was also our pleasure to receive numerous interviews of the friendly media including Straits Times, LianHe Zaobao. In one of the interviews with publication, The Edge, Mr Fumio Otani, Corporate Representative of Toshiba Asia Pacific mentioned, “The PMSM has a permanent magnet rotor inside it. Previously, motors would have coils that consumed a lot of energy and produced a lot of heat. Using a magnet, we reduce heat generation so we can eliminate the cooling fans or radiators. And we can make it as a whole package. It doesn’t have to be disassembled for maintenance. The new motors consume 30% less energy than traditional motors, and they have fewer components, which mean less noise.”
