The last unit of Laos Nam Ngiep 2 Hydropower Station was put into commercial operation on February 10, 2018 after urgent repair. So far, upon repair by its equipment manufacturer – Toshiba Hydro Power (Hangzhou) Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as “Toshiba Hydro Power”), 3 hydraulic turbine-generator units of Nam Ngiep 2 Hydropower Station resumed production and power generation.
Situated in the southeast of the Plain of Jars, Xieng Khouang and invested and constructed by China International Water & Electric Corp., a company affiliated to China Three Gorges Corporation, Laos Nam Ngiep 2 Hydropower Station boasts 3 of hydraulic turbine-generator units with maximum head of 490m, rated speed of 600r/min and rated capacity of 60WM/68.6MVA. With an installed gross capacity of 180MW, an annual average power generation of 721 million KW·h and a total investment of USD 345 million, the Station is mainly dedicated to power generation, flood prevention, irrigation and tourism.
In May 2012, Toshiba Hydro Power signed a supply and technical service contract for 3 vertical Francis type hydraulic turbine-generator units with a capacity of 60MW per unit and their accessory equipment of Nam Ngiep 2 Hydropower Station. After over 3 years of designing and manufacturing, 3 hydraulic turbine-generator units of Nam Ngiep 2 Hydropower Station with high water head and high speed were put into service in Sep. 2015, receiving high appraisals from clients for their reliability and performance.
The power station under construction at upstream of tail water river underwent dam collapse on September 11. 2017 and large amounts of slurry flooded into the powerhouse, inundating and damaging severely the said 3 hydraulic turbine-generator units of Nam Ngiep 2 Hydropower Station. The Station broke down and caused serious power shortage to Laos, north-eastern region in especial, greatly affecting local economy and the lives of local residents.
After the occurrence of such an accident, Toshiba Hydro Power immediately initiated the client demand-centered coping mechanism upon such notice by its client and assigned technicians to conduct on-site investigation in the shortest time after an urgent discussion by the production and technical department, and determine the list of supplies and equipment for repair with the client. In order to buy time, Toshiba Hydro Power gave priority to manufacturing equipment needed for the urgent repair of Nam Ngiep 2 Hydropower Station and made delivery at the fastest speed with the best quality. During the repair, disposal team of the company provided ongoing service on 24hours/7days basis, settling various issues arising therefrom at the top speed and ensuring timely completion of such repair.
The said 3 units of Nam Ngiep 2 Hydropower Station resumed power generation on schedule, alleviated the power insufficiency and made significant contribution to the development of the social economy in Laos, which also best proved the comprehensive strength of Toshiba Hydro Power in the execution of overseas projects.
