« Back Toshiba to Start Construction of Expansion of Cirebon Coal Fired Thermal Power Plant in Indonesia

  • Toshiba to Supply 1,000MW Ultra-Supercritical Steam Turbine and Generator

Kawasaki, Japan- Toshiba Energy Systems & Solutions Corporation (ESS) today announced that construction work on the expansion of the Cirebon coal-fired thermal power plant in Indonesia has started. Toshiba Corporation (Tokyo: 6501) is, with Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems, Ltd and Hyundai Engineering & Construction Co., Ltd., a member of an EPC* consortium awarded the expansion contract by PT. Cirebon Energi Prasarana (CEPR), the plant’s owner and operator. Toshiba will provide and install a 1,000MW ultra-supercritical steam turbine and generator for the plant, along with plant control systems and other equipment.

After the plant starts commercial operation in 2022, it will, together with an already operating Cirebon coal-fired thermal power plant, contribute to ease the increasing pressure for electricity demand under a long-term power purchase agreement contracted with PT. PLN (Persero), Indonesia’s state-owned electricity company.

Economic advances and growing demand are straining current electricity supply capacity in Indonesia. The Indonesian government is promoting efforts to meet present and future demand, and proposes to build an additional 35GW of power supply.

“Toshiba has a track record of supplying ultra-super critical thermal plant equipment around the world,” noted Mr. Takao Konishi, Director, Vice President of the Thermal & Hydro Power Systems & Services Division in ESS. “I am very pleased to be able to fully start EPC work now. We will work with the consortium members to combine our expertise and technologies and to bring the Cirebon expansion project to great success.”

“This project is positioned as one of the main expansion projects and power sources in Indonesia,” added Konishi. “Toshiba continues to provide diversified energy solutions and highly reliable state-of-the-art technology that can contribute to energy stability and security in Indonesia and worldwide.”
