Toshiba Launches New CSR Programme to Enrich Lives in Indonesia

Brebes, Indonesia – Toshiba Corporation today announced that it will start a new CSR program in Indonesia. The company will plant more than 70,000 mangroves with a total funding of USD56,000 over the three years along the coastal area of the Sawojajar village in Brebes, Central Java.

A key objective of this mangrove planting activity is to support the recovery and improvement of the coastal area environment by reinforcing the resilience against landslide or coastal erosion, as well as assisting capacity building of the local community people who take care of planting, and maintenance.

Ms. Idza Priyanti, Regent of Brebes, commented “On behalf of the people of Brebes, I would like to express my thanks and appreciation to Toshiba for assisting us in our fight against coastal destruction through the mangrove rehabilitation program.”

Mr. Keisuke Omori, General Manager of CSR-Office, Toshiba Corporation remarked, “We are indeed honoured to be part of this activity which will contribute to Toshiba’s causes in promoting sustainability of the planet Earth.  We believe that biodiversity conservation allows human beings to coexist with and support sustainability of the ecosystem provided by nature.”

In partnership with The Organization for Industrial, Spiritual and Cultural Advancement-International (OISCA International), a Japan headquarter organization that operates in 34 countries including in Indonesia, Brebes was selected because of its presence of a large costal mangrove ecosystem that is important for climate change adaptation and mitigation. Mangroves are known as the “cradle of life” which carries abundant biodiversity and makes it a good source of animal species such as fishes and crabs to support the livelihood of fishermen and local communities. In addition, they can reduce costal erosion and function as “a green breakwater” to protect people from high waves or tsunami.  Mangroves also absorb carbon dioxide and can reduce pollution by trapping or absorbing organic compounds.

Since 2006, Toshiba is committed to the 1.5million Tree Planting Project with its goal to plant 1.5million trees globally by year 2025, the year of the 150th anniversary of the Toshiba foundation, as a philanthropy theme.

Protection of the natural environment is one of the five areas in which Toshiba promotes social contribution activities. Other areas include social welfare, promotion of culture and sports, science & technology education and forging international exchanges & friendship. Toshiba believes in turning our guiding principles—committed to people, committed to the future—into real engagement with society, thorough events and activities that raise personal awareness and contribute to the community.
