From 2-4 August 2017, Toshiba showcased its geothermal solutions at the 5th Indonesia International Geothermal Convention & Exhibition (IIGCE) 2017. Toshiba also reaffirmed its commitment to support Indonesia’s growing energy and infrastructure needs at the event. For over 40 years, Toshiba has contributed to the country’s energy needs through thermal, hydro and geothermal power solutions, and also provided water solutions to enhance the country’s infrastructure.
Recently, the first unit of the Sarulla geothermal power plant, one of the largest in the world, which Toshiba contributed to, started operations in March 2017. Toshiba was also awarded a contract to supply two 1,000MW ultra-supercritical steam turbines and generators (STGs) to the Tanjung Jati B coal-fired power plant Unit 5 & 6 expansion project. The company had previously supplied the plant with four 660MW STGs for Units 1 to 4. In the area of hydro power, Toshiba was also awarded the Malea hydro power plant project to supply two 45MW hydro turbines and hydroelectric generating equipment.
As Indonesia’s demand for electricity continues to increase, the country’s government aims to diversify its energy mix, particularly focusing on increasing the amount of electricity generated by renewable energy, as well as adopting the use of clean coal technologies. Indonesia has one of the world’s largest geothermal reserves, and is the world’s fourth-largest coal producer.

In 2014, to further strengthen its position to support Indonesia’s infrastructural development, PT. Toshiba Asia Pacific Indonesia (TAPI) was established to deploy Toshiba’s resources and expertise. Toshiba also acquired PT. Envitech Perkasa in 2011, and has since contributed to Indonesia’s infrastructure by providing various water solutions in over 200 projects across industrial sectors.

To date, Toshiba has supplied or received orders for 16 units of steam turbines, 35 units of hydraulic turbines, and 5 units of geothermal steam turbines across Indonesia, whose combined capacity comes to over 9,300MW.
