Toshiba’s Survey Project of Hydrogen Energy System Selected by METI

Building H2One™ Supply Chains in Indonesia and the Philippines

Kawasaki, Japan — Toshiba Energy Systems & Solutions Corporation (Hereinafter: Toshiba ESS), a leading supplier of integrated energy solutions, today announced that its survey project to develop applications for the H2One™, the company’s hydrogen-based autonomous energy supply system, in isolated islands in Indonesia and the Philippines was selected by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI). Toshiba ESS aims to help solve the both countries energy problems through this survey and by expanding the H2One™ business in both countries.

Indonesia, which consists of many islands, has the challenge of supplying stable and low-cost energy for each island, and has a power supply business plan called “RUPTL,” which aims to increase its total power generation capacity rate of renewables from 12.52% in 2017 to 23% by 2020.

In the Philippines, half of the current energy supply is comprised of coal and oil-fired thermal power. The country is also reliant on imports of these fuels, and increasingly sees renewable energy as a chance to improve the self-sufficiency of its energy supply. The country seeks solutions for isolated islands with low electrification rates, and ways to reduce risk from typhoons and other natural disasters.

H2One™ is an autonomous energy supply system that uses a renewable energy source and hydrogen-powered fuel cells to deliver a CO2-free, environmentally friendly stable electricity and hot water supply. One of the applications of H2One™ is the “Off-grid solution,” which is distributed power supply systems that can supply power stably without being influenced by the weather. In order to build H2One™ supply chains in both countries, we will study to determine locations and optimal system specifications by the year 2019 and aim to implement H2One™ in the future.

Hiroyuki Ota, General Manager of the New Energy Solutions Project Team at Toshiba ESS said, “I’m confident that our expertise and know-how in the hydrogen business will help realize a new energy society with distributed energy resources for each island in Indonesia and the Philippines.”

Toshiba ESS has already reached a partnership agreement for the spread of H2One™ throughout Indonesia with the country’s Agency for the Assessment and Application of Technology (BPPT). Selection for this initiative by METI will accelerate business considerations for solutions to energy-related challenges in both Indonesia and the Philippines.

Spreading hydrogen energy technologies and products such as H2One™ throughout the world, Toshiba ESS will be working to help create sustainable energy societies through local-production and local-consumption of energy.
